Exploring the Place‐Names

St Laurence, LudlowSpeakers: John Baker and Jayne Carroll Dr John Baker and Dr Jayne Carroll work in the Institute for Name‐Studies at the University of Nottingham. Since 2013 they have been researching the place‐names of south Shropshire, working to complete the English Place‐Name Society Survey of the county, of which the first six volumes were authored by the late Dr Margaret Gelling. Their lecture will illustrate some of the findings of their most recent work, covering aspects of the languages, landscape, and history of the area from the medieval period to the nineteenth century. Jane Carroll is Associate Professor in the History of English at Nottingham University and Director, Institute for Name-Studies. She is Honorary Secretary of the English Place-Name Society (EPNS). John Baker is Associate Professor in Name‐Studies at Nottingham University. His interest is in English place-names, with particular focus on their potential as tools for understanding past landscapes and Anglo‐Saxon society and culture.
