The Lion Hotel Shrewsbury and its famous guests

If hotels are judged on their guest list, then The Lion in Shrewsbury has to be up with the best in Britain. Its VIP guests from the past include King William IV, Charles Darwin, Charles Dickens, Benjamin Disraeli and Niccolo Paganini. In more modern times the Beatles, Morecambe and Wise, Cliff Richard and Lulu are some of the celebrities who have visted The Lion. Their stories have all added to the rich history of this amazing building.
John Butterworth was a journalist for 44 years, 28 of which he was a newspaper editor, 12 years editor of the Shrewsbury Chronicle and the weekly series editor of Shropshire Newspapers which included the South Shropshire Journal and the Ludlow Journal.
In May 2008 he was awarded the MBE by the Queen for services to journalism and charity. He has written six books and been a preacher or Reader in the Church of England.
