The Viking hoard discovery in Herefordshire
Peter Reavill
The Herefordshire hoard is one of the most significant early medieval treasures ever discovered in Britain. Its discovery was revealed through reports from the Crown Court in Worcester. In November 2019, four men were found guilty of concealing, stealing and selling the ‘Viking’ treasure they had recovered illicitly from a field in Eye, near Leominster in Herefordshire four years earlier.
Peter Reavill is a landscape archaeologist specialising in the material culture of the British Isles. For the past two decades Peter was the go-to person if you found treasure in Shropshire or Herefordshire. He works closely with the metal detecting community and museums in his role as the counties Finds Liaison Officer working within the British Museum's Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS). He has dealt with amazing discoveries across the Welsh Marches and his talk will delve into the role of the PAS and the Treasure Act. It will focus of the Herefordshire hoard but he will also discuss many other treasures found by the public.
